Soil texture describes the relative proportions of sand, silt and clay, which strongly influence water storage, drainage and management response.

Texture classes (for example sandy loam or clay loam) summarise particle-size distribution. Texture does not equal structure, but it shapes irrigation frequency, leaching behaviour, trafficability and amendment response.
