Definition

Sodicity is often discussed using exchangeable sodium percentage (ESP), sodium adsorption ratio (SAR) of water or related cation ratios. Unlike salinity alone, sodicity particularly threatens soil physical behaviour—dispersion, crusting and reduced permeability.

Why it matters

  • Poor infiltration undermines irrigation efficiency and leaching.
  • Structural decline is expensive to reverse once severe.
